info
I currently work in retail whilst studying. Even though retail is not to do with nursing I have learnt a lot of transferable skills for nursing. I have learnt that being on time matters and presentation of yourself in very important. Being a great communicator is essential in retail and I can now see my communications skills I’ve learnt from retail such as listening, encouraging and being both polite and empathetic to my customers will be great skills to use for my patients also.
I can’t wait to start nursing and help people!
Katies - Clothing store
2012 - present
I currently work part time at Katies clothing store whilst studying nursing. I am responsible for keeping the store clean and organised. I also need to manage stock flow and paper work when new stock is received. I have developed skills in serving customers, building rapport, telephone etiquette, use of computer and handling of money. I also have developed skills in time management; making sure the store opens and closes at the right time and that I arrive on time for my shift.
Institute for the Blind - Volunteer
2010 - 2012
For two years I volunteered most Saturdays at the Institute for the Blind. I was involved with various activities when I was there ranging from supporting staff, answering phone calls, sending letters, talking to members of the Institute and assisting with events. It was a great experience which taught me confidence, empathy, patience, communication skills (both verbal and written) and team work.
